Clubs and Organizations
Radford
School offers to students various opportunities for social development
and leadership via clubs and organizations. Among the clubs available
for students participation are: |

National Honor Society
NHS and NJHS are more than just an honor roll. The Honor Society chapter
establishes rules for membership that are based upon a student's NHS/NJHS
Beginner's Orientation Kit for Honor Society Advisers outstanding performance in
the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character (plus citizenship
for NJHS). These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the
organization and its activities are built.
Scholarship: Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 85 percent,
B, 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent standard of excellence, or a higher
cumulative average set by the local school's Faculty Council, meet the
scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for
consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character (and
citizenship for NJHS).
Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a
student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a
positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.
Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers,
promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who
exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn
from school or community activities while working with or for others.
Character: The student of good character upholds principles of morality and
ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability,
shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good
and clean lifestyle.
Citizenship: The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance
of civic involvement, has a high regard for freedom, justice, and democracy, and
demonstrates mature participation and responsibility through involvement with
such activities as scouting, community organizations, and school clubs.
Specific standards for these criteria may vary from one school to the next. Such
variations are acceptable as long as they do not fall below the national
standards set by the National Council of the NHS and NJHS. All chapters are
required to write down the criteria and procedures used in their local selection
processes. The Honor Society adviser maintains copies of the local procedures
and has them available upon request. Any student in grades 10 through 12 in a
school with both an official charter of the National Honor Society and an
affiliation with the national office is eligible for consideration for
membership in NHS. For NJHS, any student in the second semester of the sixth
grade or grades 7 through 9 in a school with both an official charter of the
National Junior Honor Society and an up-to-date affiliation with the NJHS
national office is eligible for consideration for membership in NJHS.

Boy Scouts of America
The Boy Scouts of America was incorporated to provide a program for community
organizations that offers effective character, citizenship, and personal fitness
training for youth.
Specifically, the BSA endeavors to develop American citizens who are physically,
mentally, and emotionally fit; have a high degree of self-reliance as evidenced
in such qualities as initiative, courage, and resourcefulness; have personal
values based on religious concepts; have the desire and skills to help others;
understand the principles of the American social, economic, and governmental
systems; are knowledgeable about and take pride in their American heritage and
understand our nation's role in the world; have a keen respect for the basic
rights of all people; and are prepared to participate in and give leadership to
American society.
Boy Scouting, one of three membership divisions of the BSA (the others are Cub
Scouting and Venturing), is available to boys who have earned the Arrow of Light
Award or have completed the fifth grade, or who are 11 through 17 years old, and
subscribe to the Scout Oath and Law. The program achieves the BSA's objectives
of developing character, citizenship, and personal fitness qualities among youth
by focusing on a vigorous program of outdoor activities.

Girl Scouts of America
Girl Scouts of the USA is the world’s preeminent organization dedicated
solely to girls—all girls—where, in an accepting and nurturing environment,
girls build character and skills for success in the real world. In partnership
with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them
all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and
conviction about their own potential and self-worth.
Founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scouts' membership has grown from
18 members in Savannah, Georgia, to 3.6 million members throughout the United
States, including U.S. territories, and in more than 90 countries through USA
Girl Scouts Overseas.
